Volunteers Caring for the Gardens of GEneva

A special thank you to Marv Haseman.

Marv was instrumental in getting the Geneva High School Horticulture Classes to adopt the bridge boxes as well as the Route 31 and Third. Tom and his classes got involved because of Marv and all his efforts.

He was also our liaison with Shaun Berendt on the eagle scout project. Worked with Shaun on dimensions and guided him through the project.

The Geneva High School Horticulture classes

Under the direction of Geneva High School Horticulture teacher Tom Anderson, his class students are now involved with the beautification of Geneva. It started in 2008, with some discussions between Mr. Anderson and some Beautification committee members. In the fall of 2008, students from Mr. Anderson's four classes became involved in the fall clean-up and composting of some of our planint beds. There were about 25 students in each class. Additional discussions occurred and Mr. Anderson incorporated two beautification projects in his horticultural curriculum. In March of 2009 his classes started by planting and growing all of the State Street bridge flowers that graced both sides of the bridge from April through October.

Additionally, they adopted the two Beautification plots located at 3rd Street and Route 31. The classes were involved in the spring and fall activities of planting, weeding, composting, and trimming. The pictures include the classes' activities through the 2009 and spring 2010. Additionally Mr. Anderson has landscape design as part of his course curriculum and may include competitive team landscape design for the two plots at 3rd and Route. 31.

Shaun Berendt: Eagle Scout Project

Shaun Berendt and Boy Scout Troop 43 as an Eagle Scout service project built our flower boxes located on the State Street bridge.
